Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland. It can be caused by infection or may sometimes be acquired as a result of sexual activity. Prostatitis is frequently very uncomfortable: symptoms include significant pain, usually with a temperature and often with frequency of urination. Treatment is with antibiotics and may be required for more than two weeks. In some cases these may need to be administered intravenously.

Prostatitis can unfortunately be a recurring problem and may require many courses of antibiotics before it is finally eliminated from the body.
