Improved selection of low PSA patients requiring prostate biopsy

In a recently published article in the influential J. Clin. Oncol. (Vol 23, pages 4322-9), the authors have investigated which patients with low PSA levels (less than 10) should proceed to biopsy. They conclude that those with high density PSA (total serum PSA level divided by the prostate volume) and those with hypoechoic areas on ultrasound of the prostate are those who would more likely harbour a cancer and therefore the ones who should be biopsied.
